Navigation and mapping (Smart Mapping)
How your robot maps your home and which models support Smart Mapping.
Navigation and mapping (Smart Mapping)
Newer iRobot Roomba models use a camera and advanced sensors to systematically map your home and clean in straight lines. Older models navigate randomly.
Models with Imprint® Smart Map (vSLAM navigation)
These models create a map of your home and save it in the app:
- New generation: Roomba 105, 205, Plus 405, Plus 505, Max 705
- i series: i3, i5, i6, i7 (i1 with limited mapping)
- j series: j7, j9 and Combo variants
- s series: s9
- Combo: Combo i8
How the map is created
- The robot creates a basic map during the first cleaning run (Mapping Run).
- With each subsequent run, it refines the map.
- You can save up to 10 maps (e.g. for different floors).
- In the Roomba® Home app, you can view the map, name rooms, merge or separate them.
Managing the map in the app
- Name rooms: Tap a room on the map and give it a name.
- Merge/separate rooms: Adjust room boundaries if the robot didn't detect them correctly.
- Reset map: Delete the saved map to start a new mapping run.
- Favourite cleaning: Save preferred cleaning settings per room (suction power, mopping intensity, number of passes).
Models with random navigation (no mapping)
These models navigate without a map and clean in a random pattern:
- Roomba 600 series (all), 800 series, e5, e6, 680
- Braava Jet 250, Braava 300 series
Tip: With random navigation, it's recommended to run the robot more frequently, as not every area is covered on every run.
900 series
The 900 series uses iAdapt® 2.0 navigation with visual localisation (vSLAM). It creates a map that can be viewed but not edited in the app.
Note
For optimal mapping, ensure good lighting during the first runs and do not move the robot manually.
