Cleaning modes: vacuuming, mopping and combo
Which cleaning modes your robot offers and how to activate them.
Cleaning modes overview
Depending on the model, your iRobot robot offers different cleaning modes. Here is an overview.
Vacuuming only
All Roomba models can vacuum. For Combo models (105, 205, Plus 405/505, Max 705, Combo i8, Combo j), you can activate "Vacuum only" mode by removing the mopping pad and water tank or selecting this mode in the app.
- Roomba 105: Remove the mopping pad plate, pad and empty the water tank.
- Roomba 205: Remove the water tank and mopping pad (press release buttons on both sides).
- Plus 405/505, Max 705: Select "Vacuum only" in the app or remove the mopping roller.
- Vacuum-only robots (600, 800, 900 series, e5, e6, i1, i3, i5, i6, i7, s9, j series): Default mode is vacuuming.
Vacuuming and mopping (combo mode)
Available only on Combo models. The robot vacuums and mops in a single pass.
- Roomba 105 Combo: Install the pad plate with a moistened pad and fill the water tank with cold water.
- Roomba 205 DustCompactor™ Combo: Slide in the water tank with pad (Velcro attachment). The robot automatically avoids carpets.
- Plus 405/505 + AutoWash™ Dock: Default mode is vacuum + mop with roller. The dock automatically cleans and dries the roller.
- Max 705 + AutoWash™ Dock: Same as Plus 405/505. Additionally: PowerSpin™ mopping roller with PerfectEdge® technology.
Mopping only
Only available on Combo models and Braava robots.
- Combo models: Select "Mop only" mode in the app.
- Braava Jet 250: The mode is automatically detected based on the pad inserted – wet cleaning pad (blue), damp cleaning pad (orange), dry cleaning pad (white).
- Braava 300 series: Choose between wet cleaning mode and dry cleaning mode via the mode button on the device.
SPOT cleaning
For targeted cleaning of a single dirty area (approx. 1 m diameter, spiral pattern). Available on most Roomba models via the SPOT button or by tapping the On/Off button twice (new generation).
Dirt Detect™
Many Roomba models automatically detect heavily soiled areas and clean them more intensively. The light ring indicator flashes blue.
Important notes
- When mopping, only use cold water or an iRobot-approved cleaning solution.
- Do not use mopping functions on unsealed hardwood floors or sensitive laminate – water damage possible.
- After every mopping session: empty the water tank and clean or replace the pad/roller.
