Shipping a Lithium-Ion Battery – Transport Regulations

Transport regulations for shipping lithium-ion batteries.

Shipping a Lithium-Ion Battery – Transport Regulations

Lithium-ion batteries are classified as dangerous goods. When shipping – e.g. as part of a repair (RMA) – you must comply with certain transport regulations.

When Is This Relevant?

  • You are sending your robot with the built-in battery for repair.
  • You are shipping a replacement battery separately.

Basic Rules for Shipping

Shipping a Robot with Built-In Battery

  • The battery may remain in the device as long as the device is switched off and protected against accidental activation.
  • Swiss Post accepts devices with built-in lithium-ion batteries as standard parcels, provided the battery does not exceed 100 Wh (all iRobot model batteries are well below this).
  • Pack the device so that it cannot move inside the parcel.
  • Damaged or swollen batteries must NOT be shipped by post.

Shipping a Single Battery Separately

  • Cover the contacts/terminals with insulating tape.
  • Pack the battery individually in a non-conductive material (e.g. plastic bag).
  • Use a sturdy cardboard box with padding material.
  • Apply the lithium battery label (UN 3481 for battery in device / UN 3480 for standalone battery) if required by the shipping provider.

Shipping Providers – Switzerland

  • Swiss Post: Accepts devices with Li-Ion batteries up to 100 Wh as parcels. Single batteries up to 100 Wh are also permitted. Damaged batteries are excluded.
  • DHL / DPD / UPS: Generally accept devices with built-in batteries. Stricter conditions may apply for single batteries – check the provider's current terms and conditions.

What Is NOT Allowed?

  • Shipping damaged, swollen or leaking batteries by post or courier.
  • Shipping without adequate packaging/padding.
  • Air freight of single batteries without correct dangerous goods declaration (IATA regulations).
