Suction power is decreasing or robot does not clean thoroughly

If your robot no longer cleans as thoroughly as usual, this is typically caused by dirty or worn parts. Follow the steps below.

Step 1: Empty the dustbin

  • Remove the dustbin and empty it completely.
  • Gently tap the bin to remove fine dust.
  • For models with AutoEmpty™ Dock or Clean Base: check whether the bag in the dock is full and replace it if needed.

Step 2: Clean or replace the filter

  • Remove the filter from the dustbin.
  • Tap the filter against a hard surface. Do not wash it with water (exception: certain older models).
  • Replace the filter every 2–3 months or sooner if heavily soiled.

Step 3: Clean the main brushes

  • Remove the rubber extractors (i series, j series, s9, Combo, new models) or bristle brushes (600 series, 800 series) and remove hair, threads and debris.
  • Use the included cleaning tool to cut tangled hair.
  • Check whether the brushes are damaged or worn. Replace them if needed.

Step 4: Check the side brush

  • Remove the side brush and clean the axle of hair and debris.
  • Replace the side brush if the bristles are bent or worn.

Step 5: Clean the sensors

  • Wipe the cliff sensors (underside) and the optical sensor (top, on camera models) with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Dirty sensors may cause the robot to skip areas.

Step 6: Check the cleaning mode

  • Make sure the correct cleaning mode is selected (e.g. carpet mode, maximum suction).
  • Enable automatic carpet detection and the Boost function in the iRobot HOME app, if available.
