Unusual noises – causes and solutions

What to do when your robot makes unusual noises.

Unusual noises – causes and solutions

Unusual noises often indicate foreign objects or worn parts. Check the following points.

Step 1: Check the brushes

  • Remove the main brushes (rubber extractors or bristle brushes) and clean them thoroughly.
  • Remove hair, threads and foreign objects from the brush axles and brush housing.
  • Check whether the brushes are damaged or deformed. Replace them if needed.

Step 2: Check the side brush

  • Remove the side brush and clean the axle.
  • If the side brush clicks or rattles when spinning, remove deposits from under the brush.

Step 3: Check the wheels

  • Push the drive wheels in and out several times. Check that they move freely.
  • Remove hair and debris wrapped around the wheel axles.
  • Check the front caster wheel: pull it out, clean it and reinsert it.

Step 4: Check the dustbin and filter

  • Make sure the dustbin is correctly inserted and the lid is closed.
  • A loose bin can rattle during cleaning.
  • Check whether the filter is clogged – a blocked filter increases motor load and causes louder noises.

Step 5: Foreign objects under the robot

  • Turn the robot over and check whether objects (e.g. cables, small toys, paper) are jammed.
  • Check the cliff sensors for contamination.

If nothing helps

Contact iRobotics customer service at service@irobotics.ch or via the iRobot HOME app. A persistent loud motor noise may indicate a defect.
